Excavation services are an essential part of the construction service and have been for decades. Civil construction companies have performed various heavy haul and excavation services on construction sites for years in order to prepare the area for various major projects.
It’s not uncommon, however, for these construction crews to dig up some extremely interesting, historic, and flat-out weird items while excavating construction sites. There are 7.8 million production workers in the U.S. alone and each day could hold something new and exciting. Here are some of the strangest items that constitution workers have found throughout the years.
Dinosaurs
A city in Alberta, Canada was digging a trench for a new housing development when workers discovered some pretty interesting fossils. Paleontologists from the Royal Tyrrell Museum believe that the fossils were from a Hypacrosaurus, a large hadrosaur that lived roughly 68 million years ago.
Mummies
In 2011, a construction crew in China was digging up a road when they found a mummy draped in silk finery with robes, slippers, and jewelry. And this was not just one of those everyday mummies we all stumble upon, but it a 700-year-old mummy!
Un-detonated Bombs
During WWII, there were 3.4 million tons of explosives dropped as part of Allied bombing campaigns. As many as 15% of those bombs never exploded and were just covered up by structures and land. On December 25, 2016, a 4,000 pound Royal Air Force (RAF) bomb was discovered underneath a construction site in Augsburg, Germany.
The Year 1894?
Construction crews were digging around Scotland in 2015 when they discovered a rusty metal box. The box was only the size of a typical shoe box but inside was essentially a time trip to 123 years ago. Inside the capsule was a newspaper from 1894, a paper scroll, and a bottle of whiskey.
Whale Fossils… From 4 Million Years Ago
Whale fossils are pretty cool but they aren’t too special unless they’re from 4 million years ago. In September of 2015, construction crews uncovered ancient whale fossils that was 25 feet long and stayed in tact for centuries.
You never know what kind of strange items will be uncovered when construction crews are performing excavation services. There will, however, certainly be many more interesting items discovered over the next few centuries.
